HELR 171 - Clinical Medical Practicum

Prerequisite(s): Minimum grade of C required in the following courses: COMM 101 Public Speaking T> COMM 103 Interpersonal Communication T>  or ENGL 101 English I T> MATH 107H Math for Healthcare  or higher; EMIC 104 Medical Terminology T> BIOL 210 Anatomy and Physiology T>  or BIOL 211 Anatomy and Physiology I T>  and BIOL 212 Anatomy and Physiology II T> HELR 102 Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) HELR 103 Certified Medication Aide (CMA) HELR 150 Medical Professional Issues HELR 155 Emergency Preparedness HELR 160 Laboratory Diagnostics and Phlebotomy . Concurrent enrollment in HELR 170 Clinical Medical Assisting and Minor Procedures HELR 180 Medical Administrative Aspects  and HELR 181 Medical Administrative Practicum .       
This course provides the student with an opportunity to apply clinical and laboratory skills in a laboratory classroom and in a direct supervised preceptorship in a medical facility. The course places emphasis on enhancing competence in clinical skills necessary for comprehensive patient care and strengthening professional communications and interactions. Upon completion, students should be able to function as an entry-level health care professional. Students must maintain a C or higher in the corequisites of of HELR 170 Clinical Medical Assisting and Minor Procedures HELR 180 Medical Administrative Aspects  and HELR 181 Medical Administrative Practicum  and obtain instructor approval to participate in preceptorship practicum hours for this course. Students must provide proof of specified immunizations and specified background check required for each practicum site.
